Range - Gas Griddle Accessories

Select gas and electric ranges and cooktops come with a griddle or have a griddle accessory. There are several types:

Aluminum: Non-stick coating

  • Used with a 8,000 BTU center oval burner.
    • The center grate is removed and the griddle put in its place on some models.
    • Some models come with an integrated griddle and no center grate.
  • Recommended for models with a griddle burner option on the knob.
  • Using the griddle on HI for an extended amount of time without food can damage the nonstick coating.
  • Clean with soap and water. Not recommended for the dishwasher or self-clean cycle.
  • Use only plastic, nylon, or wooden tools to prevent marring the non-stick coating. Never use metal utensils to lift or cut food on the griddle (knives, pizza cutter, etc.).
    • This griddle is similar to other non-stick cookware in that minor surface scratches may occur with normal cooking. Large or deep scratches will degrade the performance of the griddle, it is recommended to replace griddles with such damage.
  • Uses non-stick coating similar to Teflon (Teflon is a name brand)

Cast Iron:

  • Oval Reversible Grill/Griddle is used with a 10,000 BTU center oval burner (min. BTU) with griddle option.
  •
    • The 10,000 BTUs is needed for the grill side to perform effectively. Performance is not guaranteed when used with burner BTUs less than 10,000.
    • The center grate is removed and the griddle put in its place.
    • Griddle option on controls allows for better grill/griddle performance.
  • Oval Griddle is used with a 8,000 BTU center oval burner (min. BTU) with griddle option
  •
    • The center grate is removed and the griddle put in its place.
    • Griddle option on controls allows for better griddle performance.
  • Rectangular Griddle and Reversible Grill/Griddle is used on models with a Griddle option on the controls.
  •
    • Some models feature a center oval burner or dual burner. They will either have an integrated griddle and no center grate or comes with both (interchange the center grate with the griddle or grill/griddle).
    • Some models have a griddle that sits on the left side grate. Ex.  Lodge griddle and reversible grill/griddle.
  • Using a cast iron griddle or grill/griddle on models with no Griddle Option on the controls:
  •
    • Griddle performance is improved when used with a model featuring a Griddle option; however, the griddle can be used if both the front and rear burners are the same BTUs. This will provide more even heating across the griddle surface.
    • A grill or reversible grill/griddle should not be used with lower BTU (6,000 - 8,000 BTU) burners, since they may not be adequate for grilling.

General Tips:

  • Use good quality griddle if purchasing at kitchen store
  • Cast Iron comes pre-seasoned with vegetable oil. Clean with hot water and a stiff brush. Season by rubbing a light coating of vegetable oil on the surface. Not recommended for the dishwasher.
  • Aluminum griddles can be cleaned with soap and water. Do not scrub, since it can damage the non-stick coating.
