Refrigerator Freezer Burn
As food freezes, some of the moisture in the food is drawn to its surface and freezes. This can cause frost to appear inside packages or containers. As moisture is drawn out of the food over time, it begins to dehydrate. This is often called "freezer burn". Generally, moisture is prevented from being drawn out of foods that are covered and/or tightly wrapped.
To reduce freezer burn:
- Food stored inside a freezer bag should be tightly wrapped and all excess air expelled from the package.
- Remove the plastic covering provided by the store and repackage food in freezer paper (double wrapped), vacuum sealed packaging, etc.
