Dishwasher - Washing Plastic

In most cases, plastic items can be placed in the dishwasher. However, be sure to follow the item's manufacturer's recommendations. Some items are not dishwasher safe or can only be placed in the upper rack because of the heat from the heating element.

 

Washing Plastic Items in a Dishwasher

If there are no instructions with the item, here are some general guidelines to follow when washing plastic in the dishwasher.

 
  • Plastic Food Storage Containers: Normally safe to wash in the dishwasher in the upper rack or placed in the either the upper or lower rack in dishwashers with a hidden heater (no exposed heating element).
  • Baby Bottles and Nipples: Generally safe If washing dishwasher-safe bottles. Keep in mind that dishwashers do not normally sanitize items unless the dishwasher has an Anti-Bacteria or Sanitize cycle.
  • Water Bottles: Normally safe. Check the label or with the manufacturer to determine if it is dishwasher-safe.
