Dishwasher - Washing Metal Items

If you are washing something made from metal or that has metal on it, use caution. Not all metal should be placed in the dishwasher. Below are some general guidelines; however, we recommend checking with the manufacturer of the item (if possible) to see if it can be washed in the dishwasher.

  • Aluminum: Usually safe. Darkening or spotting is possible, which can be removed by scouring with a soap filled steel-wool pad. Some colored anodized aluminum can fade.
  • Iron: Not safe. Iron will rust
  • Pewter: Not safe. Pewter tarnishes easily.
  • Stainless Steel: Usually safe. Rinse if not washing immediately, since salty or acidic foods can stain if left on the tray or other item.
  • Sterling Silver & Silver-plating: Usually safe. Rinse if not washing immediately, since salty or acidic foods can stain if left on the tray or other item. Dry detergent can cause difficult-to-remove black spots, so avoid placing under the detergent dispenser. Don't mix silver and stainless steel or copper.
  • Tin: Not safe. Tin can rust.
