Bottom Freezer Refrigerator – Filter Maintenance Alert Message

On bottom-mount refrigerators that use the RPWFE water filter, the refrigerator uses radio frequency identification (RFID) to detect leaks and monitor the filter status. The water filter or bypass plug must be installed properly for water to be dispensed. The water filter cartridge is located inside the cartridge holder in the upper left corner of the fresh food compartment.

Diagnosing the Filter Maintenance Alert Message on a Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

On models with an LCD touch screen control, you may see "Filter Maintenance Alert" on the display. It will also say: "Your refrigerator has detected a potential leak. Your ice and water is turned off. Call Maintenance at 1-877-959-8688."

If you see this message, please check the following prior to scheduling repair service.

1. Incorrectly installed filter or bypass plug. When the filter or bypass is correctly installed, the word "FRONT" will be showing. If "BACK" is showing, then reverse the filter or bypass and reinstall. View how to install a RPWFE water filter:

2. Incorrect filter or bypass plug. This refrigerator requires an RPWFE to work correctly. Make sure the correct bypass plug or filter is being used. The ID chip on the filter detects when a wrong or non-genuine GE Appliances part is used. If this happens, the dispenser will not work and the display may read "Leak Detected". Check on the back of the filter for the ID chip. This will be a black square outline under the label where it says "This side must face inward". If there is no chip under the label, it is not a genuine RPWFE filter. You can order a replacement filter from the GE Appliances Parts & Accessories website.

3. No filter or bypass is installed. Either the RPWFE or the bypass plug must be installed for the dispenser to work. If you need the bypass plug and one was not supplied with the refrigerator or has been misplaced, one can be ordered at no charge by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, call 1-800-561-3344.

4. Leak. If there is a leak detected, the dispenser will shut off. This would require a service call to correct.
