Bottom Freezer Refrigerator – Not Filtering or Unfiltered Water Message

A bottom freezer refrigerator that offers water filtration may display a Not Filtering or Unfiltered Water Message in the control panel display. This does not typically indicate a problem with the appliance.

Understanding the Not Filtering or Unfiltered Water Message on a Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

On bottom freezer refrigerators that use the RPWFE water filter, the refrigerator uses radio frequency identification (RFID) to detect leaks and monitor the filter status. You will see "Not Filtering" or Unfiltered Water" on the display when the water filter bypass plug is being used. The icemaker and dispenser will work, but the water is not being filtered.

Non Touch-Screen Control Panel: "Not Filtering" message appears under a red triangle icon to indicate the bypass plug is in place.

LCD Touch-Screen Control Panel: The Water screen will say "Unfiltered Water."
