Water Softener - Sediment Removal

Sediment is fine, foreign material particles suspended in water. This material is most often clay or silt. Extreme amounts can give water a cloudy appearance.

A water softener will not remove sediment. We recommend installing a whole-home filter that removes sediment upstream (before) the water softener. For information regarding whole home filtration systems, visit:

The Sediment Filter (a feature available on some GE Water Softeners) keeps sediment from going into the resin tank only. It is not designed to completely remove sediment from the water. This filter catches sediment as the water is pumped into the resin tank. As the water exits, the sediment is carried off (hence self-cleaning filter) into the now softened household water.
