Disposer - Lubrication
A Garbage Disposer does not require routine maintenance or lubrication. You can run a few ice cubes through the Disposer from time to time to clean the blades and help dislodge any bits of food that have gotten stuck in the components. Do this every few weeks or so, depending on the frequency with which you used the appliance.
Lubrication
Blades
You should never put any grease or oil down your Garbage Disposer. Doing so will cause the grease or oil to act as a lubricant on the blades. This makes them very ineffective in grinding food waste. You should always turn on the water for about 30 seconds prior to putting food into the Disposer. Use cold water. The cold water actually acts as a lubricant for the blades when the Disposer is grinding food waste, and is needed to flush the debris down the drain.
Motor
Your Disposer motor is permanently lubricated. No oiling is required during the life of the appliance. Do not be alarmed if the Disposer motor seems to slow down while grinding. The Disposer is actually increasing torque (grinding power) and is operating under normal conditions.
- If your Garbage Disposer suddenly seizes up, this could be due to a loss of power. Check for a tripped circuit breaker or fuse that supplies power to the appliance. Sometimes, the motor bearings may get frozen or seize up. Disposers typically have a reset button on the appliance. You may want to consult the Owner's Manual for your model for instructions on how to reset the Disposer.
