Electromagnetic Fields
Do home appliances generate electromagnetic fields (EMF)?Yes. An EMF exists wherever electricity is used. This is a fundamental law of physics. Where there is current flow, there is an electric and a magnetic field.
Can EMF be measured?Yes. Suitable instruments exist for the accurate measurement of both the electric and the magnetic components of the EMF. Accurate, complete measurement requires very sensitive and expensive laboratory equipment.
Do these fields vary in intensity by type of appliance?Yes. Field intensity depends on many factors: current flow, product configuration and construction (including materials used), type of motor, type of motor shielding, number of turns of wire in a coil, length of the coil and material in its core, wiring configuration, and the owners use patterns.
Does the intensity of the field dissipate with distance?Yes. It will vary with the type of the product but generally the field intensity decreases rapidly as distance from the source increases.
Is it possible to either eliminate or minimize the field generated by an appliance? It is probably not technologically possible to eliminate the EMF generated by any product that uses electricity to operate. It is possible however, to minimize a field with either shielding or different wiring configurations.
What is the appliance industry's position on potential health effects from exposure to EMFs?To our knowledge, no health effects have been verified. The scientific community's current consensus is that no definitive evidence of a cause and effect relationship exists, but enough questions have been raised to justify more research.
Does the WiFi in Connected/Smart Appliances have EMF?Our Connected products, along with all other wireless technologies, produce electromagnetic fields (EMF) to communicate wirelessly. The FCC sets limits that all wireless devices must meet to ensure no harmful interference or exposure. Our Connected Appliances are tested to the FCC part 15 standard to meet these requirements. Your GE appliance’s Wi-Fi/BLE FCC ID is located on a sticker on your appliance. For information regarding your appliances' WiFi, refer to the
Owner's Manual.
