Disposer Runs But Does Not Grind Foods

If the disposer sounds like it is running normally, but does not grind the food, check the following:

  • Fibrous materials put in disposer: Very high fiber materials such as artichoke leaves or corn husks should not be put in disposer. They are difficult to grind and may cause nuisance tripping of the overload protector. Corn cobs can be placed in disposer if they are cut up.
  • The cutting edges of the shredder and impellers are worn or dull: The cutting edges of the shredder and impellers can become dull over a long period of time, impairing the grinding capability. This can be remedied by having a technician replace the flywheel and shredder parts or by replacing the disposer. Order a new disposer from GE Appliance Parts online.
