Refrigerator - Dispenser Control Panel Not Working

It can be very upsetting to discover that the dispenser control panel on your refrigerator is not working. Not only does this prevent you from getting water and ice from the dispenser, but temperature adjustment and turning the appliance on and off is done using the dispenser control panel. We are providing suggestions below to get a non-responsive control panel working again.

New Refrigerator

If the dispenser control panel on a new refrigerator does not work, here are some things to try to get it working:

  • Static electricity caused by pulling the plastic protective covering off the dispenser can cause it to temporarily "lock up". Unplug the refrigerator or turn it off at the circuit breaker for 30 seconds to reset the control.
  • If the doors were removed during installation, be sure that the door wiring harness is plugged in. This is described in the Installation Instructions for the refrigerator you own.
  • Make sure the water supply to the refrigerator is turned on at the shut-off valve on the water supply line that is connected to the refrigerator.

Existing Refrigerator

If the dispenser control panel on an existing refrigerator does not work, try the following:

  • Make sure the control panel is not locked. Most dispensers have a child lock-out feature. For model specific instructions, consult the Owner's Manual for the refrigerator model you own.

  • Try resetting the control panel by turning off power to the refrigerator briefly. Unplug the refrigerator or turn it off at the circuit breaker for 30 seconds to reset the control.
  • Replacing the water filter may reactivate the dispenser control on some models. You can purchase a genuine replacement water filter from our GE Appliances Parts & Accessories website.
  • Make sure the water supply to the refrigerator is turned on at the shut-off valve on the water supply line that is connected to the refrigerator.
