Disposer Use with Septic Tank

Garbage disposers (disposals) in general are safe to use with septic tanks. Because GE disposers have a powerful grinding action that reduces food waste to small particles, they are safe for any properly sized and maintained septic system.

Older septic tank systems sometimes use a grease trap. When installing a disposal on such a system, always bypass the grease trap with the drain line. It is also a good idea to have the sludge pumped from the tank before installing a disposer in an older home. Septic tank systems do need regular cleaning.
