Dishwasher - Opening Detergent Cup - Mechanical Timers

If the detergent cup did not open after a wash cycle or if it has been closed manually, it should be easy to get the cup to open up. Tips for opening the detergent cup on dishwashers with a mechanical control (a timer knob) are provided below.

Opening the Detergent Cup on Dishwashers With a Mechanical Control Knob

  • Starting at the OFF position, turn the timer knob a full revolution clockwise. The detergent cup should open.

  • If the dial is in the OFF position, the detergent cup can be manually opened by turning the handle counterclockwise.

  • Do not force the cup open and do not attempt this on an electronic model dishwasher.

Detergent Cup Did Not Open

  • If using tablets or pods, make sure they are not binding the cup cover and preventing it from opening. Make sure they are properly lined up in the opening.

  • Check for obstructions. Dishes must be loaded so as to not block the detergent cup from opening. Make sure pot handles and long handled utensils are not touching or blocking the detergent cup.

  • Make sure the timer is not stuck. Rotate the timer all the way around and back to OFF and see if the cup is now open. If not, carefully try to manually open the cup by turning the cover counter-clockwise.
