Refrigerator - Water Filter Indicator Light

Many refrigerators with a water filter have a "replace filter" indicator light for the water filter cartridge on the dispenser control panel. This is often a timed function rather than a sensor that determines the filter's capacity.

Some refrigerator models use a water filter with a RFID chip in the filter. The filter uses radio frequency identification (RFID) to detect leaks and monitor the filter status. The water filter cartridge is typically located inside a cartridge holder in the upper left corner of the fresh food compartment. Rather than manually resetting the "replace filter" indicator light, the RFID will automatically reset the Replace Water Filter reminder when a new RFID filter is installed. The reminder cannot be manually reset.

The information provided below is for resetting the "replace filter" indicator light for refrigerators that require the indicator light to be manually reset.

Monogram, GE and GE Profile™ Series Indicator Light

  • Orange: The replace filter light will turn orange to tell you that you should replace the filter soon. This is the only time it should be orange.
  • Red: The filter cartridge should be replaced when the replace filter indicator light turns red or if the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases.
  • Green (or no light): The light will either disappear or turn green when it is reset after you have replaced the water filter cartridge. Both are considered normal.

After you change the filter, you must press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER pad until the red light goes off. The light will either disappear or turn green. If you do not hold the pad in, the red light will stay on. Also, if you hold the pad in for a long period of time, the light may go off and then come back on. Try holding the pad for just a few seconds to reset the indicator light.

A power outage can reset the timed function. If the light does not turn orange or red after 6 months, this can be normal if power had been disconnected or there was a power outage.
