Dishwasher - Option Definitions

Over the years, GE Appliances has offered a variety of options on our Dishwashers. Below is a general listing of many of these options, along with a brief description of each. For a more detailed description of each option and how to use it, please refer to the Owner's Manual for your specific model. Keep in mind that these are options and should not be confused with Dishwasher cycles.

Dishwasher Options

  • Added Heat: When selected, the cycle will run longer with heating elements on to improve both wash and dry performance. It cannot be used with the Rinse Only cycle.
  • Auto Hot Start: The ExtraClean Sensor automatically measures and controls water temperature and assures effective cleaning (120-degree inlet water is still recommended). Auto HotStart is great for areas where the inlet water runs through a slab floor or where the water heater is a great distance from the Dishwasher. Starting in 2001, this feature is automatic on some Dishwasher models; there is no button to push. A sensor senses the inlet water temperature and will add the appropriate time as needed.
  • Child Lock: You can lock the controls from any selections being made. Or you can lock the controls after you have started the cycle. Children cannot accidentally start the Dishwasher by touching the pads with this cycle selected.
  • Delay Start: You can delay the start of the wash cycle for up to 9 hours (see individual features for delay times). See the use and care manual for how to program this feature.
  • Dry Boost: A drying option that targets hard-to-dry items like plastic. It significantly improves drying performance, providing up to three times better drying compared to the Heated Dry option. The option implements a higher final rinse temperature with additional dry time to heat (approximately 40 minutes).
  • Extra Hot Wash: When this option is selected, the cycle will run longer with the heating element on to improve both wash and dry performance. Note: Cannot be selected with Rinse Only.
  • Extra Scrub: For use with heavily soiled and/or dried-on, baked-on soils. This option must be selected prior to starting the cycle. This option adds 16 minutes to the cycle time. Note: Cannot be selected with Rinse Only cycle.
  • Heated Dry On/Off: You can select Heated Dry On for fast drying or Off to allow the dishes to dry naturally and save energy. Using the Heated Dry will extend your wash cycle by 8 minutes for the Speed Cycle and up to 30 minutes for all other cycles.
  • Hi-Temp Rinse: Turns the heater on in all post-rinse and final rinse cycles to prevent spots on dishware.
  • Hi-Temp Wash: Energizes the heater to boost water temperature in all prewash and main wash fill cycles. Recommended for use on heavily soiled dishes. (maximum temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Hot Start: See Auto Hot Start
  • PreWash: For use with heavily soiled and/or dried-on, baked-on soils. This option adds an additional 16-minute PreWash in addition to the one or two 2-minute PreWash that are already part of a cycle. This option must be selected prior to starting the cycle and cannot be selected with Rinse Only.
  • Steam Prewash: For use with heavily soiled and/or dried-on, baked-on soils. This option must be selected prior to starting the cycle since it adds steam at the beginning. The Steam option adds up to 30 minutes to the cycle time. This option is available with Heavy, AutoSense, and Normal cycles.
  • Wash Zones: Selecting either the Upper or Lower Wash Zones will target dishwashing of just one rack. This option should be used when dishes are placed in only one rack.
