Reverse Osmosis - Distillation Comparison
Difference between Reverse Osmosis and Distillation Both systems are highly effective filtration systems using two different methods.
Distillation:
Distillation is the process of separating water from the organic and inorganic contaminants through a combination of evaporation (boiling), cooling and condensation.
- Advantages of distillation include; easy to install and can disinfect water.
- Disadvantages are higher operating cost and slow processed water output---up to 7 hours per gallon.
Reverse Osmosis:
Reverse Osmosis removes contaminants from water by using pressure to force the water through a semipermeable membrane. NOTE: Cyst reduction in an R/O is accomplished through carbon filtration in the unit, not the R/O membrane.
- Advantages of a Reverse Osmosis system are higher processed water output, GE R/O units take approx 4 hours to produce 1.5 to 2 gallons of water. Another advantage is R/O systems use little to no electricity; GE units use4 "AA" Batteries to power the electronic monitor system.
