Reverse Osmosis - Noises
A Reverse Osmosis system will create some sound or noise when it is operating. While there are normal sounds that occur, there can also be sounds that may not be a normal sound. We are providing information regarding the expected operating sounds as well as sounds that may indicate attention is needed.
Understanding Sounds or Noises Created by a Reverse Osmosis System
Normal Noises Produced by Reverse Osmosis
- The system will make some slight noises as it processes water, even though the faucet is off. A slight humming noise from the Reverse Osmosis system as water is dispensed is normal. This is due to the pressure change inside the system as it begins processing more water.
- A slight dripping/gurgle noise from the sink drain is normal. This is reject process water flowing down the sink drain.
- If just installed, a whining sound can be heard when the tank is pressurizing for the first time. This noise should stop within a few minutes.
Abnormal Noises Produced by Reverse Osmosis
- On new installations, a loud noise means it was probably installed wrong. A slight adjustment can be made to the drain line adapter to minimize noise. This may be too difficult for some people to do. Directions for doing this are as follows:
- Locate the drain line adapter, it is a white plastic piece with an outlet on the side. It has a bulb where the tube to the faucet is connected. It is most likely mounted directly below the sink in the drain line between the sink drain and "P" trap.
- Turn on the R/O faucet so the system is processing water and noise is occurring.
- Rotate/turn the drain adapter in the vertical axis. You may need to loosen the nuts at the top and bottom of the drain line adapter.
- Continue to rotate the adapter to a position that minimizes the noise.
- Retighten the nuts.
- A loud whining noise can be caused by missing filters and/or membrane. There are no extra filters that come with the system. Make sure all filters and the membrane are installed properly at the time of installation or after sanitizing.
