Refrigerator - Keurig® Brewing System Foil Seal Separated or Burst Pods
Sometimes the foil seal on the K-Cup pods can separate from the plastic. You may hear a pop sound during brewing and then see coffee grounds and liquid in the recess area.
This can be caused by:
- Improperly sealed K-Cup pod: Always inspect the K-Cup before brewing to ensure it is sealed well.
- Old pods: Check the expiration or "best if used by" date on the side of the pod. The foil seal can fail when the pod is past this date.If you have pods past the "best if used by" date, discard them.
- Non-Keurig® authorized K-Cup: Look for "Keurig" or "Keurig Brewed" emblem.
- Clogged lower piercing pin: The K-cup pod could burst due to overpressure caused by a clogged lower piercing pin.
How to clean the lower piercing pin:
- Insert a straightened paper clip into the inlet slot on the side of the lower pin. The slot is on the same side of the pin as the point on top.
- Remove the paper clip and rinse the pin directly under a stream of running water.
- Before replacing the brewer, dispense 10 oz of hot water to purge excess water in the hot water system
The Single Serve K-Cup Brewer can also be cleaned in the top rack of your dishwasher, though we also recommend rinsing it thoroughly after taking it out of the dishwasher to remove any soap residue.
Note: If any interrupted or abnormal dispenses are experienced, please use the hot water feature and dispense 10 oz of water, at any temperature, to purge the system.
If you are experiencing frequent clogging, burst K-Cup pods, or leaking from the brewer, please schedule a service appointment with Bodewell. If you do have a service call, keep one of the recently used K-cup pods for the technician. The failed pods can be helpful for diagnosing the issue.
