Refrigerator - Keurig® Brewing System Removing and Cleaning Brewer

Refrigerators with the Keurig® K-Cup Brewing System have a Single Serve Brewer that should be emptied and cleaned after every use. The used K-Cup pod should not be left in the brewer after use. It is also a good idea to rinse the brewer after each use to clear out any residue or grounds (or flavor) that might transfer to the next cup. Cleaning the brewer is required after brewing cocoa, chai latte, or cappuccino because of the dairy (creamer) content.

To Remove:

Pull the brewer straight out until it clears the tracks (rails) on the bottom of the control panel. We recommend removing the brewer at the same time as the cup so that you can hold the brewer over the cup (upright or sideways) while transporting it to dispose of the pod. This helps catch any drips before and during removal. If you prefer, you can also hold a paper towel or cloth under the brewer when you are carrying it to empty the pod.

To Clean:

Rinse the brewer under running water, dish soap can be used if you rinse the brewer thoroughly. The K-Cup brewer is also dishwasher safe. To clean it, open the lid and place the brewer in the top rack of your dishwasher and run a normal wash cycle. Rinse it thoroughly after dishwashing to remove all soap residue.

If the upper and lower piercing pins in the brewer are clogged, they can also be cleaned:

Upper piercing pin:

  1. With the brewer closed, insert a straightened paper clip into the small hole at the top of the brewer and straight down into the pin. Move the paper clip up and down in the pin a few times, then remove.
  2. Open the brewer lid and find the holes in the pin. Use the paper clip to push grounds or other material out of the outlet holes of the pin.
  3. Rinse by running water into the top of the brewer and out the pin.
  4. Rinse the tip of the pin directly in a stream of water.
  5. Before replacing the brewer, dispense 10 oz. of hot water to purge excess water in the hot water system.

Lower piercing pin:

  1. Insert a straightened paper clip into the inlet slot on the side of the lower pin. The slot is on the same side of the pin as the point on top.
  2. Remove the paper clip and rinse the pin directly under a stream of running water.
  3. Before replacing the brewer, dispense 10 oz. of hot water to purge excess water in the hot water system.
