Refrigerator - Leak Detected Message on Display

On Bottom-Freezer Refrigerators that use the RPWFE water filter, the appliance uses radio frequency identification (RFID) to detect leaks and monitor the filter status. On models with an LCD touch screen, if you receive a "Leak Detected" message on the control panel and have the RPWFE water filter installed, you can check the following things to try to resolve the situation.

Diagnosing Reasons for a Leak Detected Message on the Refrigerator Display

Check the Filter Area for Leaks On or Around the Filter

  • In most cases, replacing the filter will resolve the leak.
  • If it does not, service may be needed.

Make Sure the Filter Is Installed Properly

  • Install the filter so that the front label is facing forward and is visible and the word "Back" faces the filter housing.
  • View a video about how to adjust your water filter if you get a "Replace Water Filter", "Dispenser Off", or "Leak Detected" message:

Check the Filter to Make Sure It Is a Genuine RPWFE Water Filter

  • On genuine RPWFE filters, there is a visible ID chip under the label where it says "This side must face inward". There should be a black square outline just under the label. If there is no chip under the label, it is not a genuine RPWFE filter and will not work in the Refrigerator.
  • You can order the RPWFE filter from our GE Appliances Parts & Accessories website.
