Bottom Freezer Refrigerator - Replace Water Filter or Dispenser Off Message

On Bottom Freezer Refrigerators that use the RPWFE water filter, the appliance uses radio frequency identification (RFID) to detect leaks and monitor the filter status.

On models with a non-touch screen control, if you receive a red triangle icon or a "Replace Water Filter" and/or "Dispenser Off" message on the control panel display, please check the following things to remedy the situation.

Check the Filter Area for Leaks On or Around the Filter

  • In most cases, replacing the filter will resolve the leak.
  • If it does not, service may be needed.

Incorrectly Installed Filter or By-Pass Plug

  • When the filter or by-pass plug is correctly installed, the word "FRONT" will be showing when the filter or plug is in place. If "BACK" is showing, then remove and reverse the filter or by-pass plug and reinstall.
  • View a video on how to adjust your water filter if you get a "Replace Water Filter" or "Dispenser Off" message:

  • Instructions for replacing the RPWFE filter are on an insert in the package. For an online copy, please see the following: RPWFE Filter Instructions.

Check the Filter to Make Sure It Is a Genuine RPWFE Water Filter

  • On genuine RPWFE filters, there is a visible ID chip under the label where it says "This side must face inward". There should be a black square outline just under the label. If there is no chip under the label, it is not a genuine RPWFE filter and will not work in the Refrigerator. See our Refrigerator - Genuine Water Filter vs Counterfeit Filter article for more information. View the video below to see how to install a RPWFE water filter:

Additional Support

On most models, the Replace Water Filter reminder cannot be manually reset. A new filter or the bypass plug must be installed to reset the reminder. If you need the bypass plug and one was not supplied with the Refrigerator or has been misplaced, one can be ordered at no charge by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, call 1-800-561-3344.

If you receive a "Replace Water Filter" and/or "Dispenser Off" message and the above tips do not help, you will need service. Schedule a repair appointment with Bodewell.
