Top Load Washer - No Fabric Softener Dispenser

Many Top Load Washers feature a liquid fabric softener dispenser option. For most of these models, a liquid fabric softener dispenser cup is incorporated into the design and included with the Top Load Washer. However, there are some Top Load Washers with a liquid fabric softener option that do not include a fabric softener dispenser cup. We are providing information on the correct use of liquid fabric softener in various Top Load Washer designs below.

For liquid fabric softener to dispense, the washer tub basket must spin. It is this spinning action that releases the liquid fabric softener.

Using Liquid Fabric Softener

Washers That Include a Fabric Softener Dispenser Cup

  • On Top Load Washers with a liquid fabric softener rinse option (called Deep Rinse or Power Rinse), the Washer will complete the wash cycle, drain and then move into a spin cycle to release the softener. After spinning, it will fill with water for the rinse cycle which dilutes and distributes the fabric softener through the clothes. Lastly, it will drain and spin at the end of the rinse cycle.

Washers That Do Not Include a Fabric Softener Dispenser Cup

  • Fabric softener can be used with Top Load Washers without a liquid fabric softener dispenser cup if the model has a fabric softener rinse option. The option is called Deep Rinse or Power Rinse and says "Use when adding fabric softener" on the Rinse Option control. You need to manually add diluted fabric softener during the rinse cycle or use a fabric softener ball when using Deep Rinse or Power Rinse on these models.

Cannot Use Liquid Fabric Softener

  • On Top Load Washers without a liquid fabric softener rinse option (or if you do not use the option), the Washer will drain, rinse (typically using spray rinses), drain and complete a final spin. It does not spin at the start of the rinse cycle to release fabric softener and performs spray rinses rather than a fill with water rinse which does not distribute softener.
  • Fabric softener cannot be used with Top Load Washers without a dispenser cup and no fabric softener rinse option on the control panel. When the wash cycle ends, the appliance will drain, complete spray rinses and then drain and spin. It does not spin at the beginning of the rinse cycle, nor does it fill with water to dilute and distribute the fabric softener. For these Washer models, we recommend using fabric softener dryer sheets in your dryer.
