Gas Range - Self-Clean Grates
It is possible to clean the grates on a gas range in a self-cleaning oven. This article explains the type of grates that may be self-cleaned and how this is done.
Cleaning the Grates On a Gas Range In a Self-Cleaning Oven
All grates without bumpers, including flat-wire grates, can be cleaned in a self-clean oven. In 2016, bumpers started being moved from the grates to the cooktop surface on new gas range models. Current 2017 gas range models, including free-standing, slide-in and drop-in models, now have self-cleanable grates. However, gas cooktops, rangetops and Pro-style models still use bumpers on the grates.
Heavy duty, self-clean grates are listed as a feature on models that have self-cleaning racks only because the racks are designed to stay in the oven during the self-clean cycle and will support the grates. Current models without self-cleaning racks also have self-cleanable grates (no bumpers). However, they are not touted as such because we recommend removing the racks during self-cleaning. When the racks are removed there is nothing to put the grates on. When cleaning in the oven, the grates must be placed on the oven rack(s), not on the oven floor.
If you need to reattach the bumpers to the grates or cooktop surface, depending on the model, push them in at an angle; once one edge catches, turn/twist the bumpers around until they are secured in place.
