Range - ADA/ANSI and UFAS Requirements

We test products for ADA and UFAS compliance using these 5 requirements: Forward Reach, Forward Approach, Side Reach, Control Operation, Location of Controls. For more information, see ADA Appliance Requirements.

For ranges, ADA/ANSI and UFAS requirements are the same; however, local codes may have additional or different standards based on the location. We cannot account for all local codes.

ADA or UFAS Requirements To Be Compliant For Ranges

  • Maximum high forward reach for controls and operating mechanisms is 48"; maximum low forward reach is 15".

  • Controls and operating mechanisms must be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate controls shall be no more than 5 lbs.

  • If ovens or cooktops have knee spaces underneath then they shall be insulated or otherwise protected on the exposed surfaces to prevent burns, abrasions, or electrical shock.

  • The location of controls for ranges and cooktops shall not require reaching across burners.

ADA for cooking appliances does not require the cooktop height to be 34" like countertop requirements. Appliance requirements are: reach to the controls, side reach for handles, and force required to operate controls. The legs of a range should never be removed to make the range less than 36" in height.
