Refrigerator - Water Hammer / Banging Noise

If you hear a banging noise coming from your Refrigerator, it very likely is not the appliance that is making the noise. We are explaining the reason for this below.

Diagnosing a Banging Noise Coming from a Refrigerator

Water lines supplying water to the Refrigerator may make a loud bang due to a condition called "water hammer". Water hammer is a knocking or banging noise in a water line that occurs when the water valve on the appliance opens and closes. This is caused by high water pressure from the household plumbing going into the Refrigerator. If this is occurring when the Refrigerator icemaker calls for water or the dispenser is used, this often requires a plumber to correct.
