Refrigerator - Icemaker Doesn't Fill With Water
It is very frustrating to not have any water fill into the icemaker. We understand the desire and need to get the icemaker working again. If there is no water going to the icemaker in your Refrigerator, please check the following before scheduling repair service.
Diagnosing an Icemaker That Is Not Filling with Water
Icemaker Power and Fill Connections
- Make sure the icemaker is plugged in and turned on. The power cord for the icemaker is plugged into the left or back wall of the freezer.
- Check the feeler arm or paddle to make sure it can move freely. Ice blocking its movement will signal to the icemaker to pause making ice.
- Make sure the water supply is turned on to the Refrigerator. This valve is usually found under the sink or in the basement. There is only one water line to the Refrigerator; however, there are two plastic water lines that run from the double water valve to the icemaker and the water dispenser.
- The fill tube going into the icemaker can freeze, causing no water to get to the icemaker. The icemaker must be removed to verify this, and should be checked by a service technician. Note - If this is the case, the Refrigerator water dispenser will still work.
Clogged or Partially Clogged Filter
- A clogged or partially clogged filter can result in no water or slow running water from the dispenser. Filters should be changed every 6 months. You can purchase a replacement water filter from our GE Appliances Parts & Accessories website.
- To confirm a clogged filter:
- Please remove the filter and install the bypass plug.
- Try the dispenser, if the water flow improves from the dispenser, the filter is clogged and needs to be replaced.
- If you need the bypass plug and one was not supplied with the Refrigerator or has been misplaced, one can be ordered at no charge by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, call 800-561-3344.
- If there is new construction in your area, there can be more sediment entering the water system. This extra sediment can clog your filters more frequently than the recommended 6 months.
Check to See If the Icemaker Is Working
- If the icemaker mold is empty you can pour about 4 oz. of water in the icemaker mold.
- Wait about 2 hours.
- If the icemaker kicks the ice cubes out, it is working properly.
