Refrigerator - Not Getting Water from the Dispenser

If you are trying to get water from the dispenser on your refrigerator, but no water is coming out, check the following to see if you can resolve this yourself.

Diagnosing No Water From the Dispenser On a Refrigerator

Newly Installed Refrigerator

  1. Make sure the shut-off valve connecting your refrigerator to the water line has been turned on (opened).
  2. You may not have filled the chilled water reservoir tank. Press the dispenser for 2 to 3 minutes to allow the reservoir and internal tubing to fill completely.
  3. Once water is dispensed, purge air from the lines by dispensing water for 5 minutes or 2 gallons.
  4. If the doors were removed during installation, you would have disconnected the door wiring harness. Make sure you reconnected it when the doors were put back on. Refer to the Owner's Manual and Installation Instructions for your model for the specific location of the wiring harness.

Check the Water Filter

  • A clogged or partially clogged filter will result in no water or slow running water from dispenser. It may be time to change your filter.
    • Filters should be changed every 6 months. Shop Water Filters - Purchase a GE Appliance part online.
    • To check whether you have a clogged filter, remove the filter and install the filter bypass plug in its place. Try the dispenser and if the water flow improves, the filter should be replaced. If you need the bypass plug and one was not supplied with the refrigerator or has been misplaced, one can be ordered at no charge by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, call 800-561-3344.
  • After replacing your filter, air may be trapped in the water system. Press the dispenser arm for at least 5 minutes.

Chilled Water Reservoir May Be the Cause

  • Check the water tank behind the vegetable bins to see if the reservoir "tank" is frozen or cracked. You cannot typically see water in the tank or tubing; however, usually a frozen tank will be split and will leak on the fresh food floor. This will require service to correct. Schedule a service appointment with Bodewell.
  • Low food load in the fresh food section can cause the tank to freeze. This can occur because:
    • The controls are set too cold. Set the refrigerator control to a warmer setting and wait 24 hours.
    • The meat pan lever may also be turned to the coldest position. You will want to lower the meat drawer setting or use water more frequently.

Repair Service Required
