Refrigerator - Slow Water from Dispenser

If you're getting water from the water dispenser on your refrigerator but the water is coming out very slow or is just dribbling out, we suggest checking the following before scheduling repair service.

Diagnosing Slow Water Flow From the Dispenser On a Refrigerator

Checking On a New Installation

You could still have air in the tubing. Make sure the cradle has been held down for 2 to 3 minutes to allow the chilled water reservoir in the refrigerator to fill completely.

Checking the Water Filter

A partially clogged filter can keep water from flowing well. Filters should be changed every 6 months or when the water at the dispenser starts dispensing more slowly. Replacement water filters can be purchased from our GE Appliances Parts & Accessories website - Shop GE Appliances Water Filters.

  1. To see if your have a clogged filter, remove the filter and install the bypass plug.
    • Note: If there is new construction in your area, there can be more sediment entering the water system. This extra sediment can clog your filters more frequently than the recommended 6 months.
  2. Try the dispenser to see if the water flow improves. If so, your filter is clogged and needs to be replaced.

If you need the bypass plug and one was not supplied with the refrigerator or has been misplaced, one can be ordered at no charge by calling 1-800-GECARES. In Canada, call 800-561-3344.
