Range & Wall Oven - Turkey Mode FAQs and Tips
On November 3, 2021, GE Appliances is launching our Turkey Mode Over-the-Air rollout to update certain models of ranges and wall ovens with the new Turkey Mode. This is an example of the benefit of connecting smart appliances - they can get better over time!
We will push the update to the SmartHQ™ App for you to upload. This rollout arrives just in time for Thanksgiving! Information on the Turkey Mode update is available on the GE Appliances Downloadable Appliance Upgrades page.
Turkey Mode requires the use of the Temperature Probe that came with your oven. If you cannot find your oven Probe, you can order one from our GE Appliances Parts & Accessories website. The part number for the Probe is WB20T10024.
For information on how to use Turkey Mode, please take a peek at our Range & Wall Oven - Turkey Mode and How to Use It article.
You may have questions about using the Turkey Mode on your appliance. The Turkey Mode requires the use of the Temperature Probe. Below is a list of FAQs and Tips for using the Probe and Turkey Mode.
-
The temperature on the App does not match the temperature on the Control Panel display.
-
The App temperature data may take a little longer to report causing a few degrees difference between the App temperature display and the Control Panel display.
-
-
A store-bought meat thermometer is reading a different temperature than my Probe. Which one should I believe? Is it normal to be a few degrees off between the store-bought meat thermometer and the Probe?
-
This type of temperature reading variation is not uncommon and may be related to three causes:
-
A difference between thermometers - the oven probe versus the meat thermometer.
-
The time needed for a thermometer to achieve readings – temperature probes may have different response times.
-
The area where the thermometer or Probe is placed in the meat – the turkey will not be the exact same temperature in all areas throughout the bird.
-
-
Do I need to rotate the turkey when using Turkey Mode?
-
No rotation is required.
-
-
The cord on my Probe is not long enough, it doesn’t reach the Probe jack in the oven or my Probe jack is located on the opposite side of the picture.
-
First, adjust the turkey position on the rack position recommended to allow a connection. If a turkey position adjustment is not feasible or still does not allow a connection, adjust the rack position upwards by 1 increment.
-
-
Can the turkey be cooked upside down?
-
The turkey should not be cooked upside down as it will not cook as expected in this orientation.
-
-
Can I baste my turkey?
-
You may baste your turkey; however, it is not required for this mode.
-
-
I thawed my turkey per package directions but when I insert the Probe it is reading below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
If the lower temperature is realized before the turkey is unpackaged, thaw time may be reduced by:
-
Thawing the packaged turkey for additional time in the refrigerator.
-
Placing the packaged turkey into a water bath for up to 30 minutes. This may be done in conjunction with method #1 listed above to reduce thaw time.
-
If the lower temperature is realized after the turkey is unpackaged and your turkey shows a temperature below 38 degrees Fahrenheit when you start cooking:
-
It’s very possible that it still has icy spots. You can continue cooking as planned, but you may need to add time after the oven Probe reaches the target temperature. Any areas that are not fully thawed will cook slower than areas that are fully thawed which may mean that the oven Probe reaches the proper temperature before other areas of the turkey do. We recommend you check the temperature in multiple locations with a second thermometer to ensure that all spots are properly cooked. If you don’t have a second thermometer that you can use, you can move the oven Probe to different locations to check them.
-
By selecting Turkey Mode, your oven will automatically choose the right cycle to cook a juicy turkey without your watchful eye. Using the temperature Probe, Turkey Mode helps take the stress out of your Thanksgiving Day by automatically choosing the right oven cycle and keeps you updated on the progress of the turkey so you know just when it’s done. Enjoy!
