ClearView Air Conditioner - Draining the Appliance

The ClearView window air conditioner fits over your window sill like a saddle, rather than sitting on the sill and blocking your view. Because of this design, you have an indoor side and an outdoor side.

Water is collected in the indoor section as the air conditioner removes moisture from the air during the cooling process. When the indoor tank starts to fill up, water will get pumped to the outdoor section where it evaporates or drains out. Just like any air conditioner, the water is picked up by a fan and is flung against the condenser coils to evaporate.

Because the water is pumped to the outdoor unit, draining the indoor tank is not necessary in most cases. The outdoor unit only needs to be drained in certain situations.

When to Drain the Air Conditioner and Which Side to Drain

Indoor Side

Both Sides

  • If you are removing the air conditioner from the window when moving it or storing it for the season.
  • If your are winterizing the air conditioner (leaving it in the window for winter). Note: The outdoor side should also be covered (vents and louvers) to prevent any cold air drafts.

Draining the Indoor Side

  1. Locate the drain cap on the right side of the indoor unit.
  2. Remove the drain cap.
    • Have a bucket or other suitable means for collecting water under the indoor unit when the plug filter is removed. Water will not come out after removing the drain cap but it will begin to drain as soon as the plug filter is removed in the next step.
  3. Pull the drain plug straight out. The filter is attached to the drain plug.
  4. When water stops draining out, you can replace the drain plug filter and drain cap.

Draining the Outdoor Side

Under most circumstances, you won’t need to drain the unit from the outdoor side. However, in the case where you are intending to remove the unit to prepare it for storage, there is a rubber plug on the bottom of the outdoor side that is typically drained by a technician.
