GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer - Advanced Cleaning of Lint Filter Compartment

Your GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer and Dryer has an easy-access dual-stage lint filter located between the control panel display and the dispenser drawers. With its high-efficiency air flow design, your Combo has the ability to circulate high-speed filtered air to dry your load. With the gentle tumbling, you'll notice that there is less lint generated from the air tumbling compared to what you will find in standard dryers. However, any lint that is produced and deposited on the lint filter should be cleaned to maintain the highest drying efficiency.

Lint can also accumulate in three main areas of the lint filter housing or compartment:

  • Inlet Duct (that directs air from the tub)
  • Lint Filter Assembly Channel
  • Heat Exchanger Coils or Fins

Advanced Cleaning Instructions for the Lint Filter Compartment

Tools Needed for Cleaning

  • Appliance Brushes
    • Available as a set on our GE Appliances Parts website (part number PM14X10056) or at your local home centers.
    • Any appliance brush should have soft bristles to ensure it does not bend or damage the evaporator fins.
  • Vacuum with a narrow attachment
  • Flashlight to help see inside the filter compartment

Cleaning Instructions

  1. First, follow the basic cleaning methods found in this article: GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer - Filter Cleaning.
  2. Clean the Inlet Duct to the left of the filter opening:
    1. Bend the appliance brush as needed to reach to the left.
    2. Insert the appliance brush into the lint filter opening, moving and twisting the brush to clean the area. You may need to use the flashlight to see this area better. At all times, take care to avoid forceful contact with any of the electronics or operational elements of the unit, such as the Heat Exchanger.
  3. Clean the Lint Filter Channel:
    1. While shining the flashlight into the lint filter opening, run the brush in and out along the bottom of the shoot to collect any lint that has settled there. The thinner brush in our GE Appliance Brush Set works well for this area.
    2. Also, use the brush to clean any lint that has been pushed into the cavity at the back of the channel.
  4. Clean the Heat Exchanger:
    1. Brush off any lint that has accumulated on the fins by moving the brush up and down and also by spinning the brush.
    2. As needed throughout this cleaning, slowly pull the appliance brush out of the lint filter opening while standing off to one side and being careful, as lint may become airborne when the brush bristles exit the opening.
    3. Clean the brush by shaking it into a garbage can or outside the home. If any lint remains in the brush after shaking, pull it off with your hand or a towel.
    4. When done cleaning with the appliance brush, vacuum any accumulated lint in the filter area using a narrow attachment, being careful not to bend or damage the fins of the heat exchanger.
      • In addition to the extension provided with your vacuum, you can use longer extensions that will work better to reach all the areas of the lint filter compartment. These longer vacuum extensions can be purchased at multiple online retailers.
  5. Once you are done cleaning the lint filter area, wipe off any lint that has accumulated on the control panel.
  6. To complete the lint cleaning process, perform the following two steps in this order:
    1. Run a Rinse and Dry cycle to wash away any lint that dropped into the tub. After the dry portion of the cycle, recheck the lint filter area for any new lint that may have made its way back to the filter area, and reclean this area if appropriate.
    2. After finishing the Rinse and Dry cycle, clean the drain pump filter to remove any lint that may have been captured in the pump filter. See GE Profile™ UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer - Cleaning the Pump Filter.

Cleaning Frequency

How often you should conduct this cleaning depends on numerous factors, such as:
  • the types of clothes and materials that are laundered
  • if any shedding pets are in the home
  • personal preference
Like a traditional dryer, you will not be able to clean 100% of the lint from your Combo. The Combo is designed and tested to ensure great drying performance, even if there is a considerable amount of lint buildup. You do not want to modify your lint filter assembly in any way to attempt to improve its filtering capability. In addition, never operate your Combo without its filter in place.
