Washer - Drain Hose Information

GE Profile™, GE, and Hotpoint branded Top Load, Front Load, Combo, and Unitized washers have powerful drain pumps that can pump water vertically as high as 8 feet above the floor. Spacemaker or Space-Saving compact washers can pump up as high as 5 feet.

Always consult your model's Installation Instructions for drain information specific to your model.

Flow Rate

  • The pump on a Top Load washer will pump water at a rate of 15 to 17 GPM (gallons per minute).
  • The pump on a Front Load washer and UltraFast Combo Washer/Dryer will pump water at a rate of 10 GPM (gallons per minute).
  • The flow rate of the pump is dependent upon the height of the drain pipe. For each 1 foot of additional drain pipe height, the flow rate will be reduced by approximately 1 gallon per minute.

Drain Hose Installation Requirements

  • Water may be drained into a standpipe, a wall drain or a set tub.
  • The discharge height MUST NOT BE LESS THAN 30 INCHES and no more than 8 feet above the base of a Top Load washer. Note: If the drain is not 30" high, use the Drain Hose Clip (sometimes called an Anti-Siphon Clip) provided with the Top Load washer install kit to lift up the drain hose. The clip attaches to the hose and to the back of the washer.
  • The discharge height MUST NOT BE LESS THAN 24 INCHES and no more than 8 feet above the base of a full-size Front Load washer (not compact models). Note: Front Load washers do not come with or use a Drain Hose Clip due to the design of the drain hose on the washer.
  • The standpipe or wall drain must have an inside diameter of 1-1/2" minimum and must be open to the atmosphere.
  • The length of the supplied hose from tip to tip on a Top Load and Front Load washer is approximately 60".
  • The following video shows how to replace the drain hose on earlier Top Load washers with a drain hose secured by a retainer.

Other Considerations

Check valves are not recommended for use with our washers. They could restrict flow and prevent the washer from operating per designed intent. Provided the washer is installed compliant with the installation instructions, there should be no reason for needing check valves.
