Top Load Washer - Detergent Usage

The proper use of detergent in a Top Load Washer is essential to achieve good results with every load of laundry. The information provided below will help in the correct use of various forms of detergent in your Washer.

Basic Suggestions for Detergent Usage in a Top Load Washer

  • Large loads require more detergent than small loads.
  • If your clothes are heavily soiled, increase the amount of detergent for that load.
  • If you have hard water, you will need more detergent. If you have soft water, you may need as little as 1/4 cup of detergent or you may have too many soapsuds which could overflow the top of the wash basket.
  • Add the manufacturer’s recommended amount of granular or powder detergent to the top of the load once all of the clothes are loaded into the wash basket.
  • GE Appliances does not recommend the use of washer / laundry balls. From a wash performance standpoint, washer balls are not a substitute for detergent.
Note: Pour detergent into your Washer according to the instructions on the detergent package and information from the Owner's Manual. Some granular detergents may be difficult to dissolve because of variations in content. If desired, you can dissolve the granular or powder detergent in hot water before pouring it into the wash basket.

Proper Use of Liquid Detergent

  • Add the manufacturer’s recommended amount of liquid detergent to the top of the load once all of the clothes are loaded into the wash basket. You can also use part of the measured amount to treat stains before washing.
Note: Always check the manufacturer's recommended amount and directions for use of their detergent.

Proper Use of Detergent Pods or Packets

  • If using detergent pods or packets, add these to the bottom of the wash basket before adding clothes.
