Microwave - Pacemakers

A medical pacemaker is an implanted device used to regulate heart action. Since a pacemaker is a sensitive device, there can be concern regarding interference between the pacemaker and external electrical fields (EMF) in the environment.

  • Other typical sources of electro-magnetic field interference includes automobiles, lawnmowers, gasoline engine ignition systems, airport radar, and household appliances such as: electric razors, mixers, carving knives, induction cooking, and microwave ovens.

Most pacemaker manufacturers have taken steps to minimize the susceptibility of their product to external interference. Most pacemakers are protected from microwave interference. It is recommended that persons with pacemakers consult the manufacturer of the device and their physician for additional information and guidance.
