Refrigerator - Keurig® Brewing System Grounds in Coffee

Most K-Cup coffee or tea pods contain a small filter inside the cup. If you hold the cup up to the light, you will see it at the top of the cup. The filter may occasionally break, allowing coffee grounds to escape from the cup. If this happens, coffee grounds may end up in the dispensed coffee.

Coffee grounds escaping the internal coffee filter can lead to the lower piercing pin clogging. Pressure can build up in the pod, causing the to foil seal to separate from the pod and spill liquid and grounds into the dispenser recess.

It is also possible that the foil on the K-cup pod separated, allowing grounds to get into your coffee. For troubleshooting, visit: Refrigerator - Keurig® Brewing System Foil Seal Separated or Burst Pods

How to clean the lower piercing pin:

  1. Insert a straightened paper clip into the inlet slot on the side of the lower pin.  The slot is on the same side of the pin as the point on top.
  2. Remove the paper clip and rinse the pin directly under a stream of running water.
  3. Before replacing the brewer, dispense 10 oz of hot water to purge excess water in the hot water system

The Single Serve K-Cup Brewer can also be cleaned in the top rack of your dishwasher, though we also recommend rinsing it thoroughly after taking it out of the dishwasher to remove any soap residue.

Note: If any interrupted or abnormal dispenses are experienced, please use the hot water feature and dispense 10 oz of water, at any temperature, to purge the system.
