Icemaker - New Installation Tips & Troubleshooting

If the icemaker in your refrigerator is new and has just been installed, and you are waiting for the first cubes to be made, the following points are important to consider.

 

Installation

  • The icemaker must be plugged in. It plugs in directly under the icemaker on the left rear wall. In dispenser models, the cord is in the same place, however, the ice bucket will have to be pulled out.
  • There is a cover over the icemaker receptacle. It gives the appearance of a two prong receptacle. Please be sure to take the cover off before trying to plug in the icemaker cord for the first time.
  • Air trapped in the inlet water supply will often cause the first water fill cycle to be low. If this happens, it would not be uncommon for the icemaker to advance through 2 cycles trying to fill. The second fill may overflow slightly. This should be considered a one time normal occurrence.

Temperature

  • The icemaker will NOT start immediately after being plugged in. The mold body temperature must reach approximately 15 degrees Fahrenheit before a cycle is initiated. To be safe, it is best to wait at least 24 hours. If the icemaker was installed but the water line was not added until later, once the water and icemaker are turned on the icemaker will cycle within a few minutes and fill and process its first cubes in about 1 1/2 hrs.
  • The icemaker is dependent upon the temperature in the freezer. The speed at which the icemaker produces ice is governed by the freezer dial setting.
  • There must be a food load in the fresh food and freezer compartments or the temperatures may not drop sufficiently to cycle the icemaker.

If a "no ice" condition has recently developed on an older installation or is slow in starting in a new model, try putting 4 ounces of water in the icemaker mold body and wait 2 hours and see if cubes have dropped out. If so, there may be a water distribution problem to the icemaker.
