Air Conditioner - Odor
A properly working air conditioner does not usually produce any form of odor. Smells generally come from a dirty air conditioner or from something that is recycled from the air in the room itself.
Minimizing or Eliminating Odors In an Air Conditioner
The following tips can assist with concerns with odors in an air conditioner.
- Keep the appliance clean of any build-ups. You can check out our Room Air Conditioner - Cleaning article.
- If you have a window model, make sure the air conditioner is leveled properly so that it tilts about 1/4" back. Consult the Installation Instructions for installation information for your specific model.
- The constant warming and cooling on these machines can build up moisture quickly. If it doesn't evaporate or drain properly, the stagnant water can lead to fungi, molds, and mildews and cause a musty odor.
- We do not recommend cleaning it yourself with a garden hose or pressure washer, since you are more likely to get water into electronic areas.
- Keep the filter clean. It is best to clean monthly. Take a look at our Air Conditioner - Cleaning the Filter article.
