Dishwasher - Detergent Cup Not Opening
If your dishwasher is not dispensing detergent or you discover that your detergent cup did not open, there are a few things you can check. Hopefully one of these tips will solve the concern without the need for repair service.
Diagnosing a Dishwasher Detergent Cup That Is Not Opening
Obstruction
- Load dishes so they don't block the detergent cup from opening. Make sure pot handles and other tall items are not touching the detergent cup. For more information, please check out our Dishwasher - Loading Tips article.
- On dishwashers with flip open detergent cups, it is normal for the cup cover to open against the upper rack. The cover opens to about a 45 degree opening. This design allows the jets at the ends of the lower spray arm to direct hot water into the detergent cup and dissolve the detergent pod, powdered or liquid detergent
Detergent
- Check to see if there is soap residue from the previous cycle and wipe out any old detergent from the opening.
- Detergent packs (pods) or tablets are recommended and often provide improved wash performance over liquid or powdered detergent. For more information, take a look at our Dishwasher - Using the Right Detergent and Rinse Agent article.
- If using tablets or pods, make sure they are not binding the cup cover and preventing it from opening. Make sure they are properly lined up in the opening.
- If using powdered detergent, it should be fresh and loose, not lumpy.
Timer
- The timer may be out of position or locked up.
