Opal Ice Maker - Ice Tastes Salty

If your ice tastes salty and you have a water softener, then you may want to check the function of the water softener. It may be set in a way where you have excess salt in your water. The optional Opal filter will not remove sodium from the water.

Resolving a Concern With Salty Tasting Ice With an Opal Ice Maker

If your ice tastes salty and you do not have a water softener, there could be a build-up of ice or hard mineral deposits at the top of the ice chute that should be cleaned off.

Cleaning the Opal

  1. Run your Opal through a cleaning cycle with only pure white vinegar. Do not mix the vinegar with any other chemicals or dilute it!

  2. Fill the reservoir to the maximum fill line, which is approximately two quarts.

  3. Run the cleaning cycle with the vinegar 3 times. This takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

  4. Soak a cloth or sponge with vinegar and place it in the ice chute. Let the vinegar soak within the Opal and on the ice chute for 18 hours.

    • Allowing the vinegar to soak for the extended period of time will help dissolve any hard water deposits.

    • Depending on the amount of build-up, you may need to use a vinegar soaked towel several times and scrub the ice chute to remove any build-up.

  5. After using the vinegar cloth, wipe the chute with clean water.

  6. Next, clean the sensors with vinegar and wipe clean with water.

    • Within the entrance of the ice chute, there are two sensors directly parallel from each other. These sensors are small and look like a marble that has been cut in half. One sensor is small and clear like a bead of glass, while the other is similar but very dark in color.

    • Use a cotton swab soaked with a little white vinegar to gently clean the surface of these sensors and make the surface as clear as possible.

  7. After draining the vinegar, run 3 rinse cycles, using fresh water for each rinse.
